Hoi An is located in Quang Nam total area of 61,71 km2, where the Thu Bon River system meets the South China Sea. The geological position is at the latitude 15o15'26" to 15o55'15" North and longitude 108o17'08" to 108o23'10" East. Cities nearby are Da Nang (25km SE), and Tam Ky (50km NE).

The mainland area is 46,22 km2 (74,9% of this is bing total natural area). Hoi An boarders with Duy Xuyen district in the South, Dien Ban district to the West and North, and the East sea to the East. Hoi An has 12 wards, in which the central ward is Minh An , Son Phong and Cam Pho. Hoi An ancient Town is about 5 km2, and was recognised by UNESCO as a world cultural heritage site on December 14, 2009

About 18 km from the mainland is the cluster, Cham Island. With an area of 1,549 km2 (25% accounting for total natural area). It is within the coordinates latitude 15o52'30 '' to 16o 00'00 '' North and longitude108o24'30 '' to 108o34'30 'East. The cluster Cham Island contains many small and large islands, including Hon Lao, Hon Mo, Hon Dai, Hon Ong, Hon Tai, Hon La, Hon Kho ( Kho Me, Kho Con), and Hon Nom. Cham Island has been recognized as a world biosphere reserve on May 26, 2009.

Hoi An is also located near the Chu Lai airport in Quang Nam province, and Da Nang modern international airport. Hoi An has a special advantage, as it lies in “ the central cultural heritage road”, which includes: My Son – Hoi An – Hue. This is considered a favourable travel  route, and attracts a large number of tourists to Hoi An, from home and abroad
